"If I Could" (SPITCD007)
"If it weren't for record company
shenanigans, Nashville's Tim Carroll would surely be one of the
dominant voices in insurgent country today. Similar in vibe to
Robbie Fulks, he seemingly effortlessly oozes out the catchiest
of rocky, wit-laden tunes addressing the role of someone who fits
well into contemporary culture, aside from the fact that he loves
old-style country music." - The Independent
Tim Carroll grew up
near West Terre Haute, Indiana in rural Vigo County. He graduated
from college at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where
he joined punk rock band The Gizmos and moved to New York City in
1980. He formed a bar band called The Blue Chieftains who
had 2 singles issued on the Diesel Only label in 1990. Since
1993, he has lived in Nashville, Tennessee, writing songs and
playing gigs.
As a sideman
Tim
has played guitar with Elizabeth Cook, Amy Rigby, Lonesome Bob,
Baker Maultsby, Dennis Brennan, Bare Jr., Sonny Burgess, Duane
Jarvis and others.
As a writer
Tim has been covered by John
Prine, Robbie Fulks, Sonny Burgess, Asleep At The Wheel, and
others. He has co-written songs on CDs by Bare Jr., Duane Jarvis,
Elizabeth Cook, etc.
"If I Could" is Tim's
first UK release and features a slew of toe-tappin' rockin'
rollin' country tunes. Roadhouse rockers such as "Open
Flame" and "Good Cry" rub shoulders with rib
ticklers ("I Think Hank", "But Why") and foot
stompers - "Too Rock n Roll", "She Does My Heart
Good". John Prine has covered "If I Could" and
this album is the first release of Tim's "If I Could",
also covered by Asleep At The Wheel and Robbie Fulks.
