Speedboat "Satellite Girl" (SHOECD004, SHOELP004)

At last - the debut album album from Scotland's best-kept power-pop secret!!!

Speedboat (Finlay Macdonald, Scott Walker, Alasdair Vann & Francis Macdonald) are a Glasgow-based guitar combo who dig spunky guitars and 3 minute pop songs in equal measure.

These pop rascals believe that you can turn your amp up to 11 and still play wonderful pop...

The Boat's 1996 debut single "Satellite Girl" was produced by Norman Blake from Teenage Fanclub and received some good regional UK indie radio support. Their 1997 follow up single "Luv"/ "A-T-O-M-I-C" got some UK college radio playlistings and several spins on Radio One's Evening Session. At long last Shoeshine presents their debut album: 9 original tracks plus a groovy cover of Elvis Presley's "Change Of Habit".

Some Speedboat Press Reaction

"YUMMY! Expect your toes to tap, your head to nod, your pulse to race and your eyelashes to flickety-flutter like a kite tail in a tornado..."
-Melody Maker

"Guaranteed to banish cynical chart-bilge clean around pop's U-bend!...jangle-tastic guitars that shimmer, sparkle and soar in a way that's ornate yet instantaneously engaging, too...Clasp them warmly to your fun-lovin' bosom soonliest."
-The Herald newspaper

"Ever noticed how a classic three-minute pop song can re-route your mood as you gloomily head into work of a morning...Speedboat have an aim in life that is something akin to this"
-The Greenock Telegraph

"Jangly guitar pop dominates...pleasingly melodic stuff."
-Teletext

"Alex Chilton, Gene Clarke and Dinosaur Jr. still rule...that's the essence of Speedboat's 'Satellite Girl' which is way out of fashion, often touchingly so"
-NME

Jangly guitars right up there, catchy harmonies, breezy, fast, summery tunes, 180 second pop songs...Speedboat, like the rest of their family tree, may refuse to play away, but when they know their territory this well and to such feel-good effect, why should they?"
-Go! Magazine

"Speedboat play in the sharp, straight, pop/rock field"
-The Bob, USA

"…slabs of exceptional power pop…"
-ESP fanzine

"How many great bands can keep coming out of Glasgow"
-Radioflyer fanzine

"Top track is the eponymous 'Speedboat' which would nestle happily on, say, Top Of The Pop or The Tube, as such classic songwriting hasn't been conspicuously absent from our tvs, radio and hearts since, oh, 1986 or so. Until now."
-Jockrock Fanzine

"If you get excited over punchy, power pop, then Speedboat will blow you away!"
-The Hamilton & Motherwell People

"Speedboat are a loose collective of like-minded musicians (Finlay Macdonald - Teenage Fanclub/BMX Bandits, Francis Macdonald - BMX Bandits/Teenage Fanclub/The Pastels, Scott Walker [a name you’re all familiar with - it’s not him!] and Aladair Vann), intent on turning up their guitars and making crunchy power pop with a touch of grungey, backs to the wall distortion chucked in for good measure. A couple of singles - Satellite Girl and Luv/A.T.O.M.I.C. - from ‘96 and ‘97 respectively, pointed the way, and simultaneously turned a few heads. Now there’s a whole album of the stuff, and just in time for Summer, it must surely be cause for much celebration and merriment amongst UK pop aficionados who have become accustomed to looking west for their jollies. Both those earlier singles are included here, though it’s an impossible task to choose top tracks as it’s a blinder from beginning to end, and should be pounced upon wherever sighted. (9)"
-Luke Fanzine
